Photo #171140

[Image taken 29.6.21] Marygate car park, York. Insufficient space for two groups of pedestrians, a dog and someone on a cycle. Despite the smiles, when the three on the left in the image passed me, one of the men said, 'You should have a bell. If you have a bell you should use it.' I don't know if the person on the cycle had a bell/did not have a bell/alerted the pedestrians/did not alert the pedestrians to her presence or did so perhaps another way, such as calling out as I do. But the unpleasant comment is, it seems to me, indicative of the stress that results when too little space is allocated where more is needed. In addition to the variety of modes - pedestrians, wheelchair/mobility scooter users, and reasons for use - leisure, education, dog walking, exercise, commuting, there is also the fact people move in social groups, as here. Note also that at the time this photo was taken the gap to/from the car park and the cycle-ped-wheelchair path is clear. (Two people used it as I was taking photos - compare with #170915.) But the sandbags are redundant and are hazards. They were on the feet of two barricades see: #169993. One is now between the pedestrian in white and the male pedestrian in a hat. The other is in the background where it has been since 21.6.21. This means both are now redundant and hazards. Other images today see: #171135 and links.
